Achievements

Kana Family and Community Development Association reckoned on the positive impacts of the potentials of Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOC) to activated and capacitated a pilot parish, 18 Health professionals, Senbete and Edir members for action. It prepared regulations for Welfare and Church school units and Senbetes, which could be of great help to activate the patriarchal kana Diocesan offices here in Addis Ababa and elsewhere in the country. Kana reviewed and revised Edir regulation with saving and credit component indicating ways of cooperation and harmony. At the pilot parish a committee with four sub units namely Registration and Screening, Economic, Health Care and Home Care Services has been established. But due to unexpected problem operation been drafted and shared with the elderly who said "had we got this opportunity in our young age, we could have used it and gained a lot. " The prepared regulations will be further discussed to draw out the indicated ways of cooperation and harmony. It also prepared a Training Manual on Interactive learning and teaching for first cycle teachers of income generation and health activities and created community awareness on issues of elderly, community based development, welfare services and problem of begging.

Poverty

Around Ethiopian Orthodox parish churches and mosques many people sit and move around to beg. Number of mobile and stationed beggars who shoulder the brunt of socio-economic problems of the city is alarming. As Marie-Therese feurestein defined poverty in her book "Poverty& Health" some categories of poverty leading to both stationed and mobile beggary are:-

Inherited poverty:- poverty affecting poor parents pass on the their children, which can be part of a seemingly unending poverty cycle.

Instant poverty:- poverty caused due to sudden hazards and circumstances like earth quakes, typhoons, drought, bankruptcy, war and displacement/ refugees movement.

Absolute poverty:- poverty caused by deprivation of elements necessary to sustain life and health, such as adequate food, safe drinking water, shelter, and, employment and personal security.

Endemic poverty:- poverty caused by low productivity and poor resource base, reflected by low income, poor nutrition and health, often affecting smallholders on rain-fed farmlands, less paid or displaces laborers etc.

Terminal poverty:-poverty affecting people who are poor both at the beginning and the end of their lives. Let us stand together and find out the root causes of poverty and solve them all, so that the unending cycle somehow breaks.

Shall we let poor parents pass on their poverty to their children as a worthy Inheritance? Or cooperate and fight poverty to eradicate beggary?

Situation of Our country

Ethiopia is one of the least developed countries in the world entangled in recurrent drought and all kinds of social problems. 44% of the population lives below poverty line. The most vulnerable groups with multiple deprivation coverage, shouldering the brunt of these problems, such as lack of food, shelter, safe drinking water, health care, education and employment are the disadvantaged children, youth, women and the elderly including the disabled. Though the Government and the people are trying to eradicate poverty and solve preventive and rehabilitative features needs to be worked out in order to reverse the trend. Implementation of Ethiopia sustainable Development and poverty reduction strategy with all efforts under process might bring some change. Popular participation and enhanced collaboration of all is important.

Globalization and Poverty Reduction

Vision and mission of Globalization should focus on equitable principles of production and service giving, leading towards proper use of man-made and natural resources to reduce poverty allowing decency to citizens' lives of all nations.

Among others, this demands organizational capability, technology transfer, and capital and manpower management, But not letting the poor go-poorer and poorer and shy away to uncover the horror which all see in the streets, avenues, bus stops, gates and fence walls of religious and other buildings. Needy Elderly, Women, Children and Youth shoulder the brunt of the dismay. Disability is far more painful of not considered.

Philosophers, policy makers, activists, strategy designers, the private sector and the public at large [of developed and developing nations] have to harmonize in order to plan and speak of the needy during the Globalization process.
